Question #2

Rock,

I’ve had great success playing nlhe tournaments both live and online. I am consistently in or near the money in fields ranging from 40 to 500, but in cash games I’m very inconsistent, especially lately. This has been bothering me and i have been racking my brain for about a month trying to analyze what i do differently. The only explanations i can think of would
be the fact that i have alot more experience playing tournament style poker, or i might be playing too loose/agressive in cash games. Any thoughts? Do you see this alot? Any tips on how to translate my success in tournaments to ring games???

Kurt

Answer

Kurt,

Are you playing 9 max cash games? If so you have to tighten up a bit when its cash and theres alot of players. That being said, if you think you are too loose, I would try the 6 max games. 6 max is my favorite type for a few reasons. The action is speeded up with not so many players making decisions. You are forced into more pots and thus get more experience quicker than you would with 9 max. Tourneys are a completely different skill set. Some players (Chris Ferguson, Gavin Smith, etc) are very good tourney players yet hardly play any cash. Cash is a harder game than tournaments, however, as your decisions are always open. In tourneys, there are points when there is only one or two decisions you can make. In a cash game you can play any hand any way you want, so there is a little more weight on ur decision process. I’d try 6 max and lower limit cash at start and work up using ur tourney success as a bankroll.
